I CAN DEFINE THE TERM ELEMENT
An element is made up of the same kind of atoms.
The air we breathe is mostly made from nitrogen and oxygen, both of which are elements. |

I CAN CLASSIFY ELEMENTS INTO METALS AND NON-METALS
There a numerous ways that elements can be classified to assemble elements into groups of similar properties. Two such ways include whether they are solid, liquid or gas at room temperature. Another is to classify elements as either metals or non-metals. How can you tell whether a particular element is a metal or non-metal? Metals (like copper and aluminium) are good conductors of heat and electricity, while nonmetals (such as phosphorus and sulfur) are insulators. |
I UNDERSTAND THERE IS BOTH SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN METALS AND NON-METALS
I CAN NAME SOME COMMON ELEMENTS
There are 118 elements listed in the periodic table. These are all listed in a specific order.
The periodic table can be divided into metals and non-metals. Metals are found on the left and in the middle, whereas non-metals are on the right. There is a zig-zag diagonal line dividing metals and non-metals in the periodic table. Hydrogen doesn’t fit into this grouping and is placed over the table, this is because of Hydrogen's atomic structure. |
