UNCLE BOB SMITH TELLING THE DUNGHUTTI DREAMTIME STORY OF THE GOANNA SPIRIT.
The Dhanggati (Dunghutti language name) for Anderson Sugarloaf Mountain is Barralbarayi. Dreaming stories tell of moral guidance and care for Country and are passed down orally from generation to generation. Here Dunghutti Elder and language holder Uncle Bob Smith tells the story of Barralbarayi and the goanna spirit- which still lives on today.
THE GURRIGYN SONG - KMC THE SITUATION
please note this video contains the images of Elders who are now in the Dreaming.
In 2020 while working at MVC I had the privilege of being apart of this epic song/music clip telling the Dunghutti story from the eyes of students. Over a week, alongside DPM we split into mens business and womens business and came up with a verse each, and together alongside Dunghutti Elders came up with the chorus. The result - 'The Gurrigyn Song' - KMC the situation. Gurrigyn is the Dunghutti Totem - Praying Mantis.
The overall purpose of the broader project was to facilitate an important, inter-generational conversation about social and emotional well-being for Aboriginal young people in Kempsey. What resulted was a story of the past, present and future highlighting the strength and resilience of our mob.
While DPM were here they also filmed 'Our Country' with the Figtree Mob which you can see here
